‘Anweshippin Kandethum’ is a police drama that emerged from Tovino Thomas and was made available in Telugu. Released on February 9, this movie brings captivating storytelling and engaging narratives, making it perfect content that holds the viewer’s attention throughout.
Malayalam cinema often features police stories, primarily revolving around complex cases and the challenges faced by the protagonist, who is a police officer, in solving them. ‘Anweshippin Kandethum’ follows this intriguing concept and was released in theaters on February 9 and on Netflix on March 8, 2024.
The story begins in 1993 in Kerala, where a man named Mathan has three daughters. The second daughter, Lovely (played by Anagha), disappears while going to college to collect her hall ticket, causing her father great distress. SI Anand Narayanan (Tovino Thomas) takes up the case immediately, only to find the young woman dead in a well, which devastates her father.
Before her death, someone claims to have seen Lovely near a church’s guesthouse. Despite Anand Narayanan’s eagerness to question Father Thomas, his superior, Alex, disagrees. However, in his relentless pursuit to bring the real culprit to justice, Anand finds himself responsible for an unexpected event, leading to his suspension along with three constables.
SP Rajagopal (Siddique), aware of Anand’s sincerity, later entrusts him with the unresolved murder case of a woman named Sridevi from six years prior. Despite many attempts, the murderer remains unidentified.
Rajagopal unofficially asks Anand to solve this case, hinting at a chance for him to return to his duties if successful. Anand agrees and, along with the suspended constables, heads to ‘Cheruvelli’, Sridevi’s village, where they face resistance from the locals.
The film, directed by Darwin Kuriakose, narrates the dedication of a police officer who, despite being suspended for diligently working on a murder case, takes up another case unofficially and strives to return to his duties.
The movie progresses naturally without any unnecessary haste or dragging, avoiding loud noises, fights, and forced scenes, which typically characterize police movies. Importantly, it’s a clean film without any obscenity.
The screenplay is a highlight, with twists in both the first half and the climax significantly enhancing the story’s strength. Despite the absence of a direct antagonist or a leading lady for the hero, the film manages to captivate the audience.
All actors deliver natural performances, with Santhosh Narayanan’s background score adding strength to the movie. Gautham Shankar’s cinematography deserves special mention, beautifully capturing the local settings as per the story’s demand. Saiju Sreedharan’s editing is commendable, contributing to a film that is a perfect package of content.
Made on a budget of just 8 crores, the movie’s success, grossing over 40 crores, is a testament to its quality. It underlines the theme that, despite temporary challenges, integrity ultimately leads to success and reiterates that criminals can never escape the law. This family-friendly movie is especially appealing to those who enjoy police stories.
