Doctors perform heart transplantation from pig into human for first time-2022
A 57-year-old man is the first human to have a gene-edited pig’s heart pumping within his chest. Doctors transplanted the heart of a pig that had been genetically modified and raised exclusively to save human lives.
Doctors say David Bennett, 57, is doing well three days after the experimental seven-hour treatment in Baltimore.
The transplant was thought to be Mr Bennett‘s final chance of survival, however it is unclear what his long-term odds of survival are.
“It was either that or die,” Mr Bennett remarked the day before the procedure.
“I realise it’s a long shot, but it’s my final resort,” he explained.
