Renowned Indian music composer and Oscar award winner A.R. Rahman has experienced a significant development in his personal life.
Rahman and his wife Saira Banu have officially divorced, ending their two-decade-long marriage. On Tuesday night, Saira Banu’s lawyer, Vandana Shah, made a key statement regarding this decision, citing “emotional wounds” as the reason for the separation.
The couple, who had an arranged marriage in 1995, have announced their decision with heavy hearts.
Vandana Shah, Saira Banu’s lawyer, outlined several important points in the announcement. She revealed that after many years of marriage, Saira Banu made the difficult decision to separate from A.R. Rahman due to “emotional distress” that impacted their relationship.
Despite their deep love for each other, the couple acknowledged that significant tensions and unresolved issues had created an insurmountable rift between them. Consequently, they both felt unable to continue living together.
Saira Banu emphasized her pain and anguish, requesting public understanding and respect for their privacy during this challenging period.
A.R. Rahman also spoke about the divorce, expressing his feelings on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter).
He reflected on how they had hoped to soon celebrate 30 years of marriage but were met with an unexpected ending instead.
Rahman remarked that broken hearts can impact even the divine and acknowledged that some things cannot be easily repaired. He also expressed hope that people would understand and respect their need for privacy during this time.
The couple, who married in 1995, lived together for nearly 29 years and have three children: Khatija, Raheema, and Ameen.
