The much-awaited IPL Mega Auction for the 18th season of the Indian Premier League commenced this afternoon in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

A total of 577 players are being auctioned, with 10 franchises vying for 204 slots. Auctioneer Mallika Sagar started the proceedings, wishing the franchises good luck.

The auction kicked off with Punjab pacer Arshdeep Singh, who saw intense bidding. His base price was set at ₹2 crores, but the bidding war escalated rapidly.

Sunrisers Hyderabad fiercely competed, pushing the bid up to ₹18.75 crores. However, Punjab Kings utilized their ‘Right to Match’ card and secured Arshdeep for ₹18 crores.

What is the ‘Right to Match’ Card?

According to IPL rules, franchises can use the ‘Right to Match‘ card to reclaim players they had previously released.

When a released player comes up for auction, the original franchise can match the highest bid made by other teams to retain the player.

Recently released by Punjab Kings, Arshdeep Singh was reclaimed by the team using this provision.
