Gautam Gambhir’s Freedom Curtailed as BCCI Tightens Rules
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly preparing to introduce a set of stringent regulations for players and coaching staff, including head coach Gautam Gambhir. Following a series of underwhelming performances in recent Test matches, particularly during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy last year, the board appears determined to curb certain privileges enjoyed by the team.
Traditionally, cricketers’ families, particularly spouses, have been allowed to accompany them on long tours. However, the BCCI now believes that prolonged family presence may negatively impact players’ focus and performance during overseas assignments. According to a report by Dainik Jagran, the board intends to reinstate pre-2019 rules, which permitted family stays for only two weeks during tours lasting over 45 days.
Additionally, BCCI has decided to enforce stricter travel policies for the players. It is reported that every player must travel with the team in the official bus, and solo travel will no longer be allowed. The move is aimed at fostering team cohesion and discipline.
Gautam Gambhir’s Manager to Face Restrictions
BCCI’s new policies will also affect head coach Gautam Gambhir. Sources indicate that the board is planning to restrict the freedom currently enjoyed by Gambhir’s manager, Gaurav Arora. Under the proposed changes, Arora will no longer be allowed to stay at the team’s hotel or sit in the VIP box during matches. Furthermore, he will be barred from traveling with the team on the bus.
Limit on Luggage and Other Rules
In another significant change, the BCCI has decided that it will no longer bear the cost of excess luggage beyond 150 kilograms during air travel. Players will have to cover the expense for any extra luggage themselves.
Meeting with Senior Players and Coaching Staff
A high-level meeting involving Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar was held with senior BCCI officials on Saturday. Various critical issues, including the future of senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, as well as the tenure of the coaching staff, were reportedly discussed during this meeting.
According to insiders, BCCI is considering limiting the tenure of support staff members to three years. Officials believe that prolonged association with the team has led to diminishing returns in terms of performance, prompting the need for fresh personnel. Reappointments will only be considered if the candidates demonstrate consistent and exceptional results.
