In Bollywood, there is always a good market for non-stop comedy content, and OTT platforms support such content well. ‘Blackout’ is one of the recent films with such a concept. Vikrant Massey, who gained nationwide recognition with the movie ’12th Fail,’ plays the lead role in this film, which started streaming on June 7. Let’s see how this black comedy thriller fares.
Storyline:
The story is set in Pune. Lenny D’Souza (Vikrant Massey) works as a crime reporter in the city, occasionally conducting sting operations. Because he holds crucial evidence against some key individuals, they pretend not to notice him. Lenny’s wife, Rohini (Ruhani Sharma), shares a close bond with him.
One night, Lenny goes out in his car to get some food. At the same time, a gang of thieves who have caused a power outage in the city are robbing banks. In their haste, their van crashes, leaving them severely injured. Lenny happens to pass by in his car and sees the van filled with money and gold. Seeing no one around, he takes a large box and leaves.
With the box of money in his car, Lenny drives while dreaming about his future. He accidentally hits a person. A drunk man nearby gets into his car, suggesting they bury the body. Shocked to learn the person he hit is dead, Lenny reluctantly agrees.
As they try to dispose of the body, two TikTokers pass by. Lenny panics and offers them money to help bury the body. Amidst the chaos, everyone flees, and Detective Aravind (Jisshu Sengupta) emerges from nearby bushes, beginning to follow Lenny’s car.
As Lenny drives anxiously, Shruti Mehra (Mouni Roy) asks for a lift. Noticing Lenny’s suspicious driving, the police start following him. Shruti is shocked to see the drunk man in the car, who she reveals is a notorious don being hunted by the police for 14 years. What happens next? How does Lenny deal with the situation?
A journalist known for exposing corrupt individuals through sting operations finds himself stealing a box from a thieves’ van. His previously calm life turns into a tense ordeal as he makes one mistake after another to protect the money. What remains for him in the end? The story delivers this message.
Review:
‘Blackout’ is a comedy thriller that depicts a night in a journalist’s life. The story progresses rapidly from one point to another, with new characters constantly being introduced. Each character serves a purpose, adding to the story’s natural feel.
Most of the film takes place in the car, with Lenny being chased by police, a detective, and a criminal gang. The entire sequence is humorously depicted, culminating in a climax where Lenny finds himself between mafia groups.
Translating the non-stop comedy dialogues into another language is challenging, so the original dialogues might bring more laughter.
The main actors performed very naturally. Devang’s direction, Anubhav Bhansal’s cinematography, Vishal Mishra’s music, and Unnikrishnan’s editing receive high marks.
Despite some dialogues not translating well and a few scenes feeling stretched, it’s an enjoyable film to watch with family.
