Golden Hour Focus: Nitin Gadkari Announces Cashless Treatment Scheme for Road Accident Victims

Cashless Treatment Scheme for Road Accident Victims Announced By The Central Government

The Central Government is set to introduce a new scheme aimed at ensuring timely medical treatment for road accident victims. Under this scheme, victims will be eligible for cashless treatment up to ₹1.5 lakh, as announced by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

The minister stated that this initiative would be implemented nationwide by March. Victims can avail medical care up to ₹1.5 lakh within seven days of the accident.

Gadkari explained that the scheme would cover accidents caused by motor vehicles on all types of roads. He emphasized that the primary goal is to provide medical assistance during the critical ‘golden hour’ immediately following a road accident, when prompt treatment can save lives.

The scheme will be implemented by the National Health Authority (NHA). Gadkari further mentioned that the police, hospitals, and government medical agencies would coordinate to ensure the scheme’s success.

The program will operate through an integrated IT platform, which will link the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the E-Detailed Accident Report (e-DAR) application, and the NHA’s transaction management system.

According to Gadkari, a pilot project for the scheme was launched on March 14, 2024, in Chandigarh, and it has since been extended to six other states. During the announcement, Gadkari also highlighted that there is a shortage of 2.2 million drivers in the country.
