Derick Abraham Movie Review: Mammootty’s Crime Thriller Now Streaming on Aha

There’s no need to specifically mention the immense popularity of Mammootty in Malayalam cinema. He has portrayed a police officer in many films, one of which is Abrahaminte Santhathikal.

Released in 2018, this film hit the theaters with a modest budget and went on to gross over 40 crores. Now, this movie is streaming on Aha under the title Derek Abraham.

Derek Abraham (Mammootty) is a police officer who lost his parents during his teenage years. He lovingly raises his younger brother, Philip (Anson Paul).

Abraham is a man of great integrity. He is assigned to a case involving a series of murders that occur only on rainy nights. The killer uses a hammer as the weapon. Abraham is tasked with solving these murders.

Philip, Abraham’s younger brother, falls in love with Aleena (Tarushi). Abraham learns about their relationship and considers arranging their marriage when his brother confides in him.

However, unexpectedly, Aleena is murdered. Philip is arrested and brought to the station as the prime suspect. Abraham is shocked upon hearing this and questions his brother.

Philip claims he knows nothing and insists that he didn’t kill Aleena. However, all evidence points to him being the culprit.

Abraham then meets Philip’s three friends to inquire about the incident. They reveal that Philip was present at the scene of Aleena’s murder, leading Abraham to believe that his brother is indeed the murderer.

Two police officers at the station harbor resentment towards Abraham. They are angry because Abraham didn’t help when their sons got into trouble in the past.

They now try to ensure that his brother doesn’t escape punishment. Observing this, Abraham resolves to prove that his brother is guilty and sends him to jail, which causes Philip to harbor resentment against his brother.

A few days after Philip is imprisoned, one of his three friends comes to Abraham, confessing that his guilt over Aleena’s murder is haunting him.

He admits that Philip had no involvement in Aleena’s death and that they, in a drunken state, were responsible for the crime. Realizing his brother is innocent, Abraham decides to prove it.

Meanwhile, the two police officers release Philip, who had planned to kill Abraham. What happens next forms the rest of the story.

This story was crafted by Hanif. It centers on how a sincere police officer, facing challenging circumstances and enemies, ultimately saves his brother.

The story touches on the emotions between brothers. It also explores how some people, claiming to be friends, can lead others into trouble, and how honesty can create enemies around us and how one should face them.

The film starts with a series of murders committed by a psycho. Later, Abraham has to deal with the murder case, which seems to implicate his brother.

Although the narrative may not offer anything extraordinary on screen, the director successfully keeps the film from becoming boring. Gopi Sundar’s background score is a highlight of the film.

While Mammootty has done many similar films in the past, and we have seen similar remakes, fans of Mammootty’s signature style will enjoy it.
