Dwaraka Tirumala Rao, currently serving as the Managing Director(MD) of APSRTC, has been appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Andhra Pradesh.
This decision was announced by the state’s Chief Secretary, Neerabh Kumar Prasad, on Wednesday night, and is effective immediately.
Those who do not know, Tirumala Rao is an IPS officer from the 1989 batch.
Tirumala Rao was appointed as the Managing Director of APSRTC in June 2021 and has been handling the responsibilities for the past three years.
Prior to this, he served as the DGP of the Railway Department and also worked as the Commissioner of Police in Vijayawada.
Last month, just days before the elections in Andhra Pradesh, the Election Commission transferred the then-DGP K.V. Rajendranath Reddy.
At that time, there were speculations that Dwaraka Tirumala Rao might be appointed as the DGP of Andhra Pradesh.
However, Harish Kumar Gupta was unexpectedly given the position and took charge on May 6. The newly formed coalition government also intended to continue with him as DGP.
However, an incident during Chandrababu Naidu‘s swearing-in ceremony proved unfavorable for Harish Kumar Gupta.
During the event, the convoy of the Governor, Nazir, got stuck in traffic for 40 minutes, preventing him from welcoming Prime Minister Modi.
Both the Governor and the Prime Minister expressed dissatisfaction with the traffic mismanagement, leading to speculations that Harish Kumar Gupta would be replaced.
The government has now acted on these speculations.
