Stories with a wedding backdrop are not new. “Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil” is one such movie with a comedic touch.

Directed by Vipin Das, this movie hit theaters in Malayalam on May 16 this year and has been available on Hotstar in Telugu since yesterday.

Starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Vimala Raman, Basil Joseph, and Anaswara Rajan in key roles, let’s see how this film fares.

Anand (Prithviraj Sukumaran) faces troubles in his married life. A letter from an anonymous sender disrupts his household, leading his wife Parvati (Vimala Raman) to leave with their child and return to her parents’ home.

Despite his parents’ advice, Anand refuses to change his ways. He begins searching for a marriage alliance for his sister Amrutha (Anaswara Rajan) and meets Vinu (Basil Joseph) during this time.

Anand decides to marry his sister to Vinu.

Anand learns that Vinu had a past relationship, where his lover betrayed him and married someone else. Anand advises Vinu to forget his past and be happy with his sister.

Vinu then suggests that Anand bring back Parvati from her parents’ home, which he does.

However, Vinu is shocked to find out that Parvati is the woman he once loved.

Determined not to let Anand know the truth, Vinu decides to cancel the wedding with Anand’s sister.

To prove that he is not a good match, Vinu devises various plans, but none succeed. Anand makes all the arrangements for the wedding in Guruvayoor.

Amrutha tells Vinu that Parvati has revealed everything to Anand, and he has no objections to their wedding.

Realizing Amrutha’s trust in him, Vinu decides to go ahead with the marriage. However, his previous plans to stop the wedding start to work against him.

Anand suspects that Vinu wrote the anonymous letter and refuses to give his sister to Vinu. Vinu challenges Anand, stating that he will marry Amrutha at the prearranged time in Guruvayoor.

Both families reach Guruvayoor for the wedding. Anand, determined to stop the wedding, heads there as well.

Some of Vinu’s old enemies also arrive with the same intention. Everyone reaches the wedding venue. What transpires there? Will Vinu marry Amrutha? Who wrote the letter to Anand’s home? These questions form the rest of the story.

The story, written by Deepu Pradeep, maintains a comedic touch from beginning to end. The script brings humor through the groom’s failed attempts to sabotage the wedding.

When Vinu decides he must marry Amrutha, his plans backfire, creating full-fledged entertainment.

Director Vipin Das’s character design and narrative drive the story with sufficient entertainment.

However, the story loses momentum when all the characters reach the wedding venue, only to pick up slowly again towards the climax.

The story, screenplay, Neeraj Ravi’s cinematography, Ankit Menon’s background score, and John Kutty’s editing are impressive.

The actors deliver their roles naturally. Despite the Telugu title not being as engaging, the film’s narrative appeals overall.

This movie is sure to join the list of enjoyable family-friendly films.
