Jhulan Goswami Honored with Stand Named After Her at Eden Gardens

Jhulan Goswami: A Rare Honor for the Legend of Indian Women’s Cricket

Jhulan Goswami, the iconic Indian women’s cricket legend, is set to receive a unique honor at Kolkata’s historic Eden Gardens.

A stand at Eden Gardens will be named after the former Indian women’s team captain and fast bowler. The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) announced this decision to recognize Goswami’s unparalleled contributions to the game.

The “B Block” stand will bear her name as per CAB’s proposal.

This special event is scheduled to take place on January 22, 2025, during the India-England T20 match at Eden Gardens.

Notably, the stadium already has stands named after other cricket legends such as Sourav Ganguly, the late Pankaj Roy, former BCCI presidents Jagmohan Dalmiya, and Biswanath Dutt.

Jhulan Goswami, considered one of the greatest fast bowlers in women’s cricket, enjoyed a career spanning two decades with the Indian women’s cricket team.

Between 2002 and 2022, she played 204 ODIs, 68 T20Is, and 12 Test matches, taking a record 255 wickets in ODIs and a total of 355 wickets across all formats.

Expressing her joy at this rare recognition, Jhulan Goswami told PTI:
“I never imagined something like this could happen. I would love to watch a match from there. Representing one’s district, state, or country is every cricketer’s dream, but receiving such an honor is truly a great feeling—it will stay with me forever. This was made possible only because of CAB’s focus on promoting women’s cricket. Over the past 8–10 years, CAB has done remarkable work in this regard.”

Currently 41, Jhulan Goswami serves as the bowling coach and mentor for the Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

Under her guidance, the Mumbai team clinched the title in the league’s inaugural season. Earlier this year, she also mentored the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Women’s Caribbean Premier League.

While the team did not win the title, her mentorship played a key role in leading them to the finals.
