Actress Kasthuri: Case Over Objectionable Remarks on Telugu Community – Madras High Court Rejects Bail Petition
The Madras High Court has denied actress Kasthuri’s plea for anticipatory bail in a case related to objectionable remarks she allegedly made about the Telugu community.
On Thursday, a single-judge bench led by Justice Anand Venkatesh dismissed her petition. The case stems from comments made by Kasthuri during an event in Chennai on the 3rd of this month.
During her speech, Kasthuri reportedly stated that people from the Telugu community had served Tamil kings centuries ago, sparking controversy.
She further commented that Telugu individuals, who came to serve as attendants to a king’s harem 300 years ago, now claim Tamil identity, while indirectly questioning Dravidian ideologues over their stance on Brahmins in Tamil Nadu.
Kasthuri also made remarks suggesting that Brahmins faced opposition in Tamil Nadu due to advocating against stealing others’ property, lusting after others’ wives, and marrying multiple women.
Following public outrage and criticism over her statements, Kasthuri issued an apology, clarifying that her comments were directed at certain individuals and not the entire Telugu community.
Despite this, Telugu associations and prominent figures expressed strong displeasure and filed complaints with the police.
A Telugu organization based in Chennai’s Egmore area filed a case against Kasthuri under four sections.
When police attempted to serve her summons, they found her residence locked and were unable to reach her by phone, which was switched off, leading authorities to believe she was absconding.
Kasthuri then approached the High Court seeking anticipatory bail to avoid arrest.
