Last World War Review: Political Drama Meets Global Conflict

Last World War Review: Movie streaming on Amazon Prime

Hip Hop Adhi, who initially entered the Kollywood industry as a music director, quickly transitioned to acting and later to film production.

His latest project, released as ‘Kadaisi Ulaga Por’ in Tamil, hit theaters on September 20 and began streaming on Amazon Prime from October 25 under the title ‘Last World War’ in Telugu.

Plot Summary:
The story unfolds in 2028. Rajendran (played by Nassar) is a politically ambitious figure in Chennai whose rise is largely managed by his brother-in-law Natarajan (Natarajan Subramaniam).

Natarajan, secretly scheming behind Rajendran’s back, disapproves when Rajendran decides to introduce his daughter Keerthana (Anagha) as his political successor.

Despite his reservations, Keerthana steps into politics due to her father’s health issues and becomes the Minister of Education. During this period, she meets Tamil (Hip Hop Adhi) and their acquaintance turns into affection, with Tamil supporting her initiatives.

She incorporates his educational reform ideas into her plans, further straining her relationship with Natarajan.

Alarmed by Keerthana’s new influences, Natarajan seeks help from his friend, Police Commissioner Prakash, to investigate. The Commissioner discovers Tamil’s involvement with Keerthana and reports back. Meanwhile, tensions escalate globally with signs of war brewing among several nations.

Seizing this opportunity, Natarajan labels Tamil as a terrorist and conspires to eliminate him through the Commissioner. The film follows the challenges Tamil faces, Natarajan’s schemes, and how global conflict impacts Chennai.

Analysis:
The story, screenplay, dialogues, and music are crafted by Hip Hop Adhi, who presents a narrative juxtaposing the looming war with the complex local politics of Chennai. Key characters include the protagonist Tamil, Keerthana, and the antagonistic duo of Rajendran and Natarajan.

The narrative shifts from local political intrigue to a wartime scenario, diluting the impact of Natarajan’s villainy as the war becomes a central theme.

A new organization called ‘Republic’ is introduced amid the chaos, diminishing the romantic subplot between Tamil and Keerthana.

The film’s ambition of combining political drama and war scenes feels overambitious and leads to a cluttered narrative.

Budget constraints also hindered the depiction of a ‘world war’ level conflict. The extensive use of voiceover narration to drive the story makes it difficult for the average viewer to follow, leading to potential confusion. Attempting such a complex storyline is seen as a misstep for Hip Hop Adhi.

Performance:
Hip Hop Adhi, Anagha, Nassar, and Natarajan Subramaniam deliver satisfactory performances. Arjun Raja’s cinematography stands out, while Adhi’s songs and background score are just average.

Pradeep Raghav’s editing is passable. The film’s attempt to blend issues of national concern, state politics, and a disconnected love story results in a confusing and frustrating viewing experience.
