This is one of the rarest no-balls in cricket history. Typically, a no-ball is declared when the bowler makes an illegal delivery.
According to the current rules, a free hit is awarded to the batter for such illegal balls. Common no-ball offenses include overstepping the crease while delivering the ball or bowling above the waist height of the batter.
Additionally, no-balls can sometimes be called due to issues with the bowler’s action.
However, in this case, the no-ball was not caused by the bowler. It was due to the wicketkeeper, but the no-ball was still added to the bowler’s record.
This unusual incident occurred during the 2024 Vitality T20 Blast match between Somerset and Northamptonshire, witnessed by spectators in the stadium.
After the bowler delivered the ball, it went directly to the wicketkeeper, who immediately knocked the stumps down. During the review process, the no-ball was discovered.
Before the bowler had delivered the ball, the wicketkeeper had moved his gloves in front of the stumps.
According to ICC rules, it is illegal for the wicketkeeper to have his gloves pass the stumps before the ball is bowled. The replay clearly showed the wicketkeeper moving his hands in front of the stumps.
As a result, the umpire declared the ball a no-ball and awarded a free hit. The batter took advantage of the opportunity and hit a six.
