Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli find mention in President Donald Trump’s speech at Motera Stadium

US President Donald Trump made sure he touched upon aspects of India that are loved by its countrymen to receive thunderous applause during his elaborate speech at the Motera Stadium, Ahmedabad on Monday.

From quoting Swami Vivekananda to calling ‘Bollywood’ the hub of creativity, President Trump heaped rich praise on India and drew parallels between the two biggest democracies in the globe.

Notably, Donald Trump also mentioned India’s batting greats Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli and said the country cheers for ‘some of the world’s greatest cricket players’.

Donald Trump began his 2-day trip in Ahmedabad. After visiting the Sabarmati Ashram in the city, Trump attended the grand reception at the newly-constructed cricket stadium. This is his first visit to India as US President.

“India gives hope to all of humanity. In just 70 years, India has become an economic giant, the largest democracy ever to exist and one of the most amazing nations anywhere in the world. Since the turn of the decade, India’s economy has grown six times,” Donald Trump said during his address at the Motera Stadium that was packed to the rafters.

“This is the country where the people cheer on some of the world’s greatest cricket players from Sachin Tendulkar to Virat Kohli.

“All over the planet people take great joy in watching the hub of the hub of genius and creativity known as Bollywood — Bhangra, and classic films like DDLJ and Sholay.”

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his welcome address at the ‘Namaste Trump’ described the US President Donal Trump’s visit as the beginning of a new chapter in Indo-US relationship.

“The name of this program – Namaste — it has a very deep meaning… It is one of the oldest languages in the world, a Sanskrit word. Its sense is that not only the person, but also the divinity within him,” remarked Modi.

Striking a personal bond between the Trump family and India, Modi stressed the work First Lady Melania Trump is doing and the previous visit of Ivanka Trump to India a couple of years back.

“First Lady Melania Trump, it is an honour to have you here. What you have done for a healthy and happy America is getting good results. What you are doing for the children in the society is admirable,” said PM Modi.

Modi added, “You say: Be Best! You must have felt that the same sentiment of people is being expressed in today’s reception.”
