Fans of Vijay have been eagerly waiting for his latest movie The Greatest Of All Time. Directed by Venkat Prabhu, with Sneha and Meenakshi Choudary in lead roles, this film, featuring music by Yuvan Shankar Raja, has been released today in both Tamil and Telugu under the AGS Entertainments banner. Let’s take a look at how the movie fares.
Plot Summary:
The story spans from 2008 to 2024. Gandhi (played by Vijay), Sunil (Prashanth), Kalyan (Prabhudeva), and Ajay (Ajmal) are members of an Anti-Terrorist Squad and close friends.
Gandhi is married to Anasuya (Sneha), and they have a son named Jeevan. As Anasuya is pregnant again, Gandhi keeps his work a secret from her to avoid worrying her.
In 2008, Gandhi’s team participates in an operation in Kenya. Following that, they plan another operation in Bangkok.
Without revealing his real job, Gandhi takes Anasuya with him to Bangkok, despite his friends’ warnings. However, tragedy strikes as Gandhi loses his five-year-old son, Jeevan, during the mission.
Anasuya gives birth to a daughter in Bangkok but is devastated upon learning about Jeevan’s death. She becomes emotionally distant from Gandhi, and he leaves his job out of grief.
Sixteen years pass, and their daughter Jivita grows into a teenager. At this point, Gandhi goes to Moscow on a mission.
In Moscow, Gandhi is attacked by the Faizal gang. During the fight, he notices a boy who looks exactly like him, and the boy seems to be observing him closely as well.
Later, Gandhi secretly meets the boy and realizes that he is none other than his lost son, Jeevan, who has been working with the dangerous Faizal gang. Gandhi fights the gang and brings Jeevan back to India.
Anasuya is overjoyed to learn that her son is alive, and the family reunites. However, Gandhi’s friends Ajay and Nazir are soon attacked and killed, leading Gandhi to suspect that these attacks started after Jeevan’s return.
The movie then explores Gandhi’s efforts to uncover the truth behind these events and protect his family.
Review:
The movie opens with a high-energy action sequence involving an operation in Kenya, complete with fast cars, helicopters, and a high-speed chase alongside a moving train.
The grand visuals make it feel like a climax scene, although it is just the beginning. However, the story slows down significantly after this, leading to a somewhat dull progression, as the plot meanders without offering much clarity on the team’s operations.
Fans will notice the lack of songs between Vijay and Sneha, which leaves the audience waiting for the entry of Junior Vijay (Vijay’s son in the movie) and Meenakshi Choudary.
Their romantic angle finally begins after an hour, but her presence is short-lived, and the audience learns slowly that she is Sunil’s (Prashanth) daughter. The revelation that Junior Vijay is the villain also unfolds at a sluggish pace.
The film is packed with high-octane action sequences, with some standout moments, like a fight scene on a metro train and a tense confrontation surrounding Junior Vijay.
However, the emotional core of the movie feels disconnected due to a lack of a strong, coherent narrative. Senior Vijay’s attempt to portray a younger version of himself feels forced, and his hair styling, along with Junior Vijay’s, is distractingly bad.
As the movie progresses, the plot takes several twists, though instead of surprising the audience, they leave them perplexed.
The idea of the son as a villain is reminiscent of Jailer, while the weak plot brings to mind Indian 2. Despite the weak storyline, the cinematography by Siddharth and the background score by Yuvan Shankar Raja are commendable.
Venkat Rajan’s editing could have been tighter, as trimming down the lengthy runtime would have improved the pacing.
