Historic Perth Test: Bumrah and Cummins Lead as Captains for the First Time Since 1947

In a historic moment, the first Test between India and Australia at Perth, part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, commenced this morning with stand-in Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah and Australian skipper Pat Cummins making history.

This is the first time since 1947 that both teams are being led by fast bowlers. The sight of Bumrah and Cummins together at the toss at Optus Stadium was a unique spectacle for cricket fans.

Regular Indian captain Rohit Sharma is on paternity leave following the birth of his son, giving Bumrah the opportunity to lead the Indian team.

Meanwhile, Cummins has been leading the Australian team since late 2021.

India first faced Australia in a Test series in 1947/48, losing 0-4 under the leadership of all-rounder Lala Amarnath, while the Australian team was led by the legendary Sir Donald Bradman.

The last Indian fast bowler to captain the Test team was Kapil Dev during the 1985-86 tour.

As for Australia, no fast bowler had led the team against India in a Test match on Australian soil until now.

Tim Paine was the captain during India’s last two tours in 2018-19 and 2020-21.

In the Perth Test, Bumrah won the toss and chose to bat first. This match also marked the debuts of Telugu player Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana.
