Two Women Marry in Uttar Pradesh: The Story of Ranu and Jyoti’s Unique Journey
In a remarkable incident in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, two women, Ranu and Jyoti, entered into matrimony with the approval of their families. The unique aspect of this story is that one of the women underwent a gender reassignment surgery to address societal barriers.
Indra Gupta, a jeweler from Sadar Kotwali in Kannauj, has a daughter named Shivangi. One day, Jyoti, a young woman, visited their jewelry store, and the two struck up a conversation. This initial interaction blossomed into regular communication between them.
Jyoti later approached Shivangi with a request to rent a shop for starting a beauty parlor. Shivangi rented out a space in the building where their store was located. Their acquaintance eventually deepened, turning into a romantic relationship, and they decided to get married.
The couple realized that a same-sex marriage might invite societal stigma and backlash. To address this, they decided to pursue gender reassignment surgery for Shivangi. She consulted doctors in Lucknow and Delhi and underwent the procedures. Post-surgery, she changed her name from Shivangi to Ranu.
A Happy Union:
Both families supported their relationship, and with their blessings, the couple got married on November 25.
